Repair & Convert 706 Telephones (1959-1967)

Once your 706 telephone arrives in our telephone workshop we will examine the mechanical and electrical parts of the phone to check if any are damaged or missing.

We then provide a detailed work estimate by e-mail. The detailed estimate will include the proposed cost of any replacement parts (if required because they are missing or faulty).

Once you have authorised the items you require in the detailed quote we will carry out the work in our telephone workshop. However if you do not wish us to continue with the work we can return your 706 series telephone for just the return post costs.

Repair & Service £18 (Option 1)

Repair any mechanical or electrical faults found in our detailed examination.

Once the repair is complete we will also give your 706 telephone a comprehensive service. This electrical and mechanical vintage telephone service has been uniquely designed by ourselves based on many years of experience.

As part of the vintage telephone service we will adjust the mechanical parts of the 706 telephone. For example we adjust (using special test equipment) the mechanical rotary dial, the classic bells and the switch hooks. This service and adjustment will ensure the optimum performance of your vintage 706 Series Telephone.

The cost of faulty or missing parts would be additional to the repair costs shown above. However we always include the cost of any replacement parts in our detailed quote.

After all the servicing and adjustments we "soak test" your 706 telephones on our ex BT Telephone Exchange test equipment. We repeat these tests over several days before returning your vintage telephone to you.

Conversion £25 (Option 2)

Convert the 706 Series phone to make sure the vintage telephone rings with a REN of 1. Our conversion also ensures that the 706 telephones electrical circuits will not reduce your Broadband speeds or stability.

Our 706 Telephone Conversion includes the cost of the following parts:

  • A brand new round profile high quality three meter plastic colour coded (as closely as possible) telephone line cord that just plugs directly into a standard BT phone socket. Our line cords are made in the UK following the correct GPO colour code scheme.
  • As standard we always fit a new "cackle free" electronic microphone, as the original old carbon granule microphones compact over time and are the only electrical component that literally wears out.

After the conversion is complete we then give the vintage 706 phone a comprehensive mechanical & electrical service.

We adjust the mechanical parts of the 706 telephone. For example we check & adjust (using special test equipment) the rotary dial, the classic bells and the switch hooks. This service and adjustment will result in the optimum performance of your 706 Series Telephone.

Full Restoration £35 (Option 3)

Restoration of vintage 706 telephones covers all the items listed in option 2. In addition to this we also perform a thorough clean and a 3 stage plastic restoration of the telephone case.

Restoration involves renovation by hand and the application of plastic restoration compounds via a workbench buffing machine. Please note that we do NOT use coloured polishes, paints or dyes to simulate a restoration finish. We also clean / adjust the dial mechanism and the internal parts of the telephone.

Our 706 telephone restoration includes the cost of a replacement plastic curly colour matched handset cord. These handset cords are produced in the UK to the original GPO specifications.

Please note Plastic coloured vintage 706 telephones often change colour due to prolonged exposure to the sun and/or smoke. This colour change is a chemical process and not just a surface effect so it cannot be reversed.

We test the 706 series phones thoroughly before they leave our workshop, using complex BT/GPO telephone test equipment.

After restoration we always perform a "soak test" of the 706 telephones for 5 to 7 days, so that the vintage telephone adjustments have had the time to settle down.

The 706 model of telephone was introduced as the new standard British Telephone in 1959, although the first phones were produced in 1957. It was the first British telephone made of modern plastics. It has smooth curves and is much lighter and more colourful than the earlier Bakelite telephones. It was designed as a joint effort by the GPO Engineering Department, Ericsson's Telephones Ltd and the Council of Industrial Design.

Please take the time to read our FAQ (Frequently asked Questions) for more details on vintage dial telephone compatibility.
